Indeed, some african ancestors used kinky hair wigs, weaves and extensions like we do today. Your research on the subject was precise and thorough. I enjoyed this video. 🎉

I enjoyed the approach you used in this video. It is true that some african people in the history use to wear wigs and extensions but I think the debate some people have about it is more focused on the insecurities some black women have about their hair.

Hmm…I hear you, a number of women can wear wigs/extensions but there also needs to be a further analysis in how often they wear them, how and why they wear them, etc. It’s a far more complex issue, especially because of actions taken subconsciously that reflect what they’re really thinking about themselves 🤔

18:19 But I don't think that wearing wigs nowadays is jut a stylistic choice that implies a certain status. In the time of our ancestors, only the elite wore wigs and extensions (which were kinky or braided) and ordinary people wore their natural hair.
Nowadays, regardless of social class, all black women wear wigs.
The comparison forces us to admit that many of us have an insecurity about their kinky hair and are unable to leave their house without a straight hair wig on. Let's not forget that the social norm today is to either relax your hair or wear a wig and there's a dark history linked to sl*very behind this unlike in the time of our ancestors. Which is why wearing a wig even if it's old and unpretty on you is always more acceptable than wearing your natural hair even if it's healthy, long and luxurious.

In terms of the grade (quality) of the wig yes it can still be tied to status. Even today, the more more money you have, the greater the chances of you being able to afford the highest quality of hair.
However I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your perspective, you definitely have a point. Even when people can’t afford the best wigs they will still settle for questionable synthetic options which speaks volumes.
I can’t express how appreciative I am of all your comments, if I made this video just to have this conversation I’d be happy 🤭🤍🙏🏾

Someone please tell them we're not trying to be like them
I LOVE my 4c hair, and if I'm wearing a wig, I'm protecting it not trying to copy you!!!

Yes exactly 🙌🏾 Most of us still need to be educated on our history, especially when it comes to our hair.
There’s a right way and a wrong way to use wigs but we can’t assume that the next person doesn’t know what they’re doing or is trying to be someone else 🤷🏽‍♀️ It’s a tricky one, but if you know why you wear them and you know it’s helping your hair, don’t worry about anything else ❤️🥰💃🏽

I wish more of us would start embracing our nature hair because all this wig wearing and cosplaying other peoples natural look is seriously embarrassing for our collective. They are setting such a bad example for the little girls.

I couldn’t agree more ❤️ There’s not much we can do about creative expression through different looks but our natural hair and beauty should be embraced a thousand times more - that representation and self love is so important 🥰❤️💕
